Foundations 1, 2 and 3

Foundations 1 is the starting point for all new students.  Students will learn or revisit basic, classical drawing and painting techniques.  The course will cover building hand skills using various materials such as graphite, charcoal, chalk pastels and watercolor pencils.  From there we move to painting a Still Life in oils, then mixing and layering colors and finally Impressionistic painting techniques. Each session builds on the other, so that knowledge is built gradually, step by step.

Foundations 2 takes the skills learned in Foundations 1 further, enhancing and reinforcing those basic drawing and painting techniques.  A Drawing Intensive session looks at how to render different materials such as glass and reflective surfaces, Self Portraiture blends anatomical knowledge with new painting techniques and a Surrealism project encourages students towards new ways of imagining and creating their own work.

Foundations 3 follows on from F1 and F2 and goes further into the realm of composition, perspective, and also creating pieces that have more personal elements so that students begin to consider some of the conceptual and theoretical aspects of their work.  New painting techniques and materials will be introduced including watercolor, collage, printmaking and working in 3 dimensions.

Acrylic Painting

In these lessons you will look at the unique qualities of acrylic paint and how to use them to their best advantage.  You will learn how to mix acrylics, their density and how they dry.  Building on this knowledge you will abstract a pattern from a still life painting and begin to see how the acrylic medium can create very different styles, colors and the different techniques you can use to create your own pattern.  As the workshop progresses you will look at differing styles such as Art Deco, paint on different materials such as canvas and board, and start incorporating new materials such as gold leaf into your final piece.

Figure Drawing

You will learn about gesture drawing where you capture the essence of the pose or movement using a range of materials, so that when you are out and about you are comfortable creating a quick but meaningful sketch.  You will also learn about proportion, how to draw hands, feet and faces before moving onto a full life drawing.  Each class takes a step by step approach where technical and gestural elements mesh together to bring ‘life’ to ‘life drawing’.  As the workshops progress you will also explore using various materials such as charcoal, chalk pastel, pen and ink and different techniques for rendering the figure.

Intermediate level of drawing required
